Evaluation

The project was created by me to challenge and show off some of my skills.
What I chose to do for my project was to create 3 concept art pieces based on a book of my own choosing. Along with that once the concepts are drawn to pick one and turn it into a 3D scene/environment.

The project wasn't necessarily aimed at an audience in mind but to show my interpretation of specific scenes found in a book I chose and have people interpret my interpretation for themselves. this was the intent at the beginning of the project but when looking at is from a game designer point of view this could be used for an audience that is interested in the book or interested in animals. it could be used to inform people of a game is being worked on with posting the concept of the game in production(media that could be used: Instagram, Twitter, GameStop).

When thinking of the industrial use of this the concept once completed would head over to the modelling (which I tried dipping my hands in) then rigging, texturing a finally the level. The game around this book I believe would be a story based game with a cartoony yet realistic look which a AAA company like Insomniac Games could Be able to make or an indie company such as like Kindly Beast.
The book that I the book I picked was Varjak Paw, which I read from start to finish, jotting down all the scenes I found interesting. when reading the book I made sure to write down the page numbers of the scenes I found interesting so that I didn't have to read the book all over again looking for 3 specifically. I found 28 scenes in total. When picking my 3 ideal scenes I asked myself these questions; am I capable of drawing this? Does it make sense if in a drawing? Do I have the time to draw this? And is it interesting enough?

Along with researching the book, I researched the author and illustrator of the book which led me to research their competitors. All authors book illustrations were child/cartoon-like in delight which I decided to use as inspiration for my concept art with a cartoony and expressive art style.

When the 3 concepts where picked I proceeded to sketch them out on paper to plan out how everything should look like, where everything should be placed and what colour it'll be?
Next, I went along with digitalizing and resketching them with clearer lines and giving them more shape which would help me with the blocking out stage and later the colouring stage. The software that is used to do all this was Photoshop and Fire Alpaca. I believe the practical skill used has been varying successful.

At the start when colouring the cats they looked very plain and boring so I decided to use the smudge in fire alpaca to make their fur look more fluffy and more fur-like which also gave them more personality. along with that, I gave them fur textures which game them specific colours. Each concept had specific lighting and shading which gave all of them the right emotions that fit them.
I showed quite a bit of independence as I created the project along with buy the book myself for this project but I did get some help in how I could improve my work.
in the middle of the project, I was put in a 3D modelling challenge with three other classmates which caused me to stop working on it and delay me but thankfully I was able to get a one-week extension on my deadline.
I tried to complete all the tasks and goals that I created for myself but I want able to complete the 3D task I previously set for myself.

My work throughout the project was very organized or at least to a high stander. Everything has its place and it's hard to get lost and I believe I did a fairly good job at communicating my ideas.

The key decisions I made during the project are the decision of which book I would use and what scenes I would use to create the concept arts.

Overall when looking at the whole project I believe I was quite successful as I was able to complete most of it except for one task that I set myself.

I changed between using two software when making the concept art. the two software being Photoshop and FireAlpaca. The reason for this is because I don't own Photoshop at home and FireAlpaca has some abilities that Photoshop lacks in.

I the project what was most successful was drawing, creating and designing the concept arts it was fun and quite easy to do. The less successful was as I mentioned before the 3d scene which I made an attempt at by creating the 3D cat but didn't have enough time to create anything else.

I had a teacher from a different course look at my concept and giver her feedback on it. When looking at the concept she only saw what I saw after I told her what was happening I the concepts. The teacher suggested that I give each concept some sort of description which I gladly did along with giving advice about what to write in my evaluation.

If I could improve/develop this project further I'd like to finish/create the 3D scene that I didn't have the time to make.
